Hackergal’s 6 Future-Ready Competencies

Hackergal’s Hackathon Program is designed to encourage students to achieve their full potential through 6 Future-Ready Competencies. Learning to code and making a difference through technology goes beyond programming knowledge and skills. That’s why these core competencies equip girls with the ability to meet the complex demands of diverse contexts and be successful in their everyday lives and in their future.

We believe that every girl can thrive when they are given the opportunity to tell their story and share their voice. We want to champion them along the way!

HACKERGAL'S

Gamification Model

Hackergal is not about winning and losing. It is all about challenging yourself to reach your own potential and celebrating the powerful impact that girls are making through technology.

The gamification model is embedded throughout the Hackathon Program from the first introduction to code to building an interactive story or game. This model is structured to motivate girls to take their learning deeper and further with computer science.

HACKERGAL'S

Program Levels

Hackergal levels are driven by experience and knowledge, as opposed to age or grade. Girls from various grade levels are encouraged to participate, support and mentor each other, creating a collaborative learning environment with some teacher guidance.

On Hackathon Day, girls are placed in mixed teams and are welcome to share knowledge and ideas across teams. Each year, girls will progress through levels with the lessons becoming more difficult based on their level of experience with code. There are 4 levels for students to progress through each year they participate in the Hackathon Program.

Participation
Certificates

Each Hackathon should be celebrated as an accomplishment. Hackathons are cumulative events that provide an opportunity for girls to apply their learning to a special project. Hackergal provides participation certificates signed by the Hackergal team and teaching staff for all the girls that showed up, rose to the challenge, and coded for a full day. That is no small feat!

OPTIONAL AWARD BADGES

Competitive Hackathon Model

Award badges are an optional component of the gamification model and offer the opportunity to add an element of competition. There are four categories of Award Badges (Design, Coding, User Experience, Content) that can be awarded to teams. The badges are announced at the end of the Hackathon based on Hackergal’s Scoring Rubric and will be given to the team that has the highest score in each category.
